13:00 - EVENT - Feeling abstract? Curator and artist Trevor Vickers in conversation : Join Feeling abstract? curator Sally Quin and exhibiting artist Trevor Vickers for a conversation exploring Vickers' work. Website | More Information
One of Australia's most highly regarded artists, Trevor Vickers will join Dr Sally Quin Curator of the UWA Art Collection and curator of Feeling abstract? in conversation within the exhibition. Born in SA in 1943 and now based in WA, Trevor Vickers exhibited in the ground-breaking and controversial The Field exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1968. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Vickers lived and worked in Melbourne alongside Australia's best known conceptual and post-object artists including Robert Hunter, Paul Partos and Mike Brown. Following a period in England from the late 1970s to the mid-90s where he produced shaped paintings and a series of screenprints, he returned to Perth in 1995 where he has continued to explore hard-edge, minimal, geometric abstraction in his paintings. Vicker’s works are held by all the major art galleries nationally including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and numerous corporate collections such as Wesfarmers and Bankwest.

13:00 - EVENT - Friday Talk: New Art by Elham Eshraghian-Haakaansson and Sacha Barker : UWA School of Design MFA students Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson and Sacha Barker share insights on their work for their MFA graduation. Website | More Information
Join UWA School of Design MFA students Sacha Barker and Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson to see and hear about their work and recent pieces in their MFA graduation exhibition. Sacha Barker’s art embraces textile, sculpture and installation. Since her first major installation, Mindfield; the Sewing Seeds (2017), she has developed large site-specific installations that create a shared narrative with the viewer. A member of Western Australian Fibre and Textile Association (WAFTA), she has recently had work in the International Biennale Exhibition of Textile Art, Scythia. Authenticity, trust and tension permeate Sacha Barker’s research and creative practice. There is a commitment to human labour and rigorous technical experimentation. This presentation will focus on two works currently displayed in the MFA graduate exhibition at UWA’s Cullity Gallery: Untitled (rocks) (2017-2021) and There’s a saying among prospectors (2020). Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson is an award-winning Iranian-Australian Bahá’í video artist, writer, director, producer and curator and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her research navigates inherited stories and post-memory felt by her displaced community following the 1979 Revolution. Through the poetics of the moving image, she invites viewers to become the 'witness' rather than the 'passive bystander' inviting a critical discussion surrounding empathy, trust, custodianship, compassion, and social change in response to the current global social and political climate. Her practise values align to empower the voices of women within her art making. Working in community arts and collaborative social practice, Áshena, Bear Witness to Me (2021) examines empathy in film and poetry, uncovering ways to build identity in first and second generation Iranian- Australians and the Bahá’í community, to close the gaps in finding the universal threads of cultural, social, gender and heritage that unite us all.

13:00 - EVENT - Feminist Geographies with Petra Tschakert and Karen Paiva Henrique : Join Professor Petra Tschakert and Dr. Karen Paiva Henrique for a discussion on climate change with a feminist lens Website | More Information
Equitable and desirable solutions to the climate crisis require a grounded understanding of diverse values and aspirations of citizens and denizens in our societies. Drawing upon feminist geographies, Professor Petra Tschakert and Dr. Karen Paiva Henrique examine the role of social difference across gender, race, class, ethnicity, age, and other dimensions of inequality and how they intersect to shape embodied experiences of climatic changes and narratives of both harm and hope. Transitions to more just and liveable futures entail active engagement with uneven power structures to dismantle persistent patterns of domination that favour the privileged rather than the most vulnerable, and an inclusive approach to climate justice that recognises and promotes more-than-human flourishing. Professor Petra Tschakert is a human-environment geographer and conducts research at the intersection of political feminist ecology, climate change adaptation, livelihood security, and environmental, social, climate, and multispecies justice. Her current work examines intangible harm in the context of climate change, with particular emphasis on differential vulnerabilities and persistent inequalities. Dr Karen Paiva Henrique is a human-environment geographer working at the intersection of climate adaptation, cities, and multiple dimensions of justice. Her research focuses on climate adaptation planning and politics to examine how individuals with unequal resources and decision-making power protect what they value against the impacts of simultaneous crises.
