This is your night! Gather your family and friends and join Santa for the 2019 UWA Christmas Concert in support of Lifeline WA. The UWA Conservatorium of Music, national artists and community choirs will perform all your favourite Christmas songs.

Hosted by Nadia Mitsopoulos (ABC and Lifeline WA), this year’s concert is the biggest yet, as we move to a new location on UWA’s Riley Oval. Have your face-painted, visit the Christmas craft corner and have a chat to the one and only Santa.

So pack a picnic, don your Santa hat and bring the whole family along for a fun-filled festive musical evening!

There will be a selection of tasty snacks available from local food trucks and the University Club of WA will be open if you want to grab a pre-show drink. Please bring something to sit on (chairs only permitted in marked areas).

Time: Pre-show entertainment starts at 6pm with a special kids program at 6.30pm. Main show starts at 7pm.

Parking: Please consider using public transport as parking is limited during the Perth Festival Lotterywest Film Season at the Somerville Auditorium  (why not make a night of it and catch a movie at the after the concert)?

Come along and express yourself in more ways than one through the art of collage. Paper and other materials will be provided to give you the challenge to create a work that is visual as well as textual. This workshop will be led by Western Australian artist Olivia Colja, and has been developed in collaboration with Inclusive Arts Week co-curator Zel Iscel. Participation is free but registration is required due to limited space.

Join the Perth Orchestra Project and conductor Izaak Wesson for a concert of tragedy, triumph, and raw emotion as we explore the concept of ‘heroes’ through music. This concert meditates on the question of ‘what is a hero, and how do they shape our lives?’, examining the ways in which three different composers over the last two centuries have been inspired to create art in response to ‘heroes’.

The programme begins with an extract from Glass’s Symphony No.4, which is heavily influenced by the music of David Bowie. In his iconic track 'Heroes' Bowie was inspired by two lovers who were separated by the Berlin Wall, which Glass draws on in this movement. Perth-born composer Charles Barblett then offers a contemporary take on the idea of heroes and villains in our world today, in what will be a world premiere performance that focusses particularly on the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.

2020 is the 250th year since Beethoven's birth in 1770, so in celebration the concert concludes with Beethoven’s mighty Symphony No.3, the ‘Eroica’. POP will explore this work which was written at one of the most tumultuous times in European history, a time profoundly shaped by individuals who sought to dramatically change the world in which they lived.

Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery invites you to the launch of its Season 1 2020 program, featuring the opening of two new exhibitions: 'The Long Kiss Goodbye' and 'Boomerang - A National Symbol'.

Presented in association with Perth Festival, 'The Long Kiss Goodbye' explores how artists transform familiar materials and symbols into complex meditations on love, loss, attraction and repulsion.

Presented by the Berndt Museum of Anthropology, 'Boomerang - A National Symbol' examines the idea of the boomerang - beyond a symbol of 'Australia' - to highlight its many uses and meanings.

Get a behind-the-scenes look into Perth Festival’s Visual Arts 2020 program on this city-wide tour starting and finishing in the Perth Cultural Centre. Join us for this special event, custom-designed event to connect school teachers with our current exhibition The Long Kiss Goodbye.

Co-led by visual arts educator Erin Knight, UWA Graduate School of Education, and art historian Dr Janice Lally, LWAG Curator of Academic and Public Programs, the event will introduce educators to the exhibition and its accompanying Education Kit.

The Friends of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery present the next theme in their Art History Lecture Series: Australian Landscape Then and Now. Presented by Carl Altmann, this new series will look at numerous different aspects of landscape paintings from the late nineteenth to the twentieth century. Refreshments are provided.

Many artists have struggled to depict the Australian landscape. Some, like Arthur Streeton, have portrayed a picture-perfect view of rolling hills and verdant valleys while others, like Russell Drysdale, have shown the harshness of the climate. In more recent years, artists have endeavoured to portray their personal and political thoughts on the country.

Artist Penny Coss presents a new performance work in response to her installation featured in The Long Kiss Goodbye.

For Pendulum Acts, Coss will drag, shift and erase layers of her installation to reference her encounters in the landscape as a democratic space, where hierarchies shift and constantly change. Carefully choreographed, the performances speak to the idea of passages of time and transience. Community Partner: Perth Festival

Just 18 per cent of biographies on Wikipedia are about women. When it comes to female artists and creators, that number is even lower. Wikimedia Australia is partnering with the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra's Know My Name project to enhance the understanding and appreciation of work by Australian artists who identify as women.

On the weekend of International Women's Day, join us at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery and learn to create new Wikipedia pages about female creators. You'll be joining new editors all around Australia who are attending workshops this very weekend to do their bit.

Become part of the Wikipedia community of volunteers who collaboratively create and maintain the world’s largest and most popular research tools.

The Friends of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery invite you to join them on a visit to Robertson Park Artists Studios. Robertson Park is an independent, self-funded, non-profit studio collectively run by artists Graham Hay, Frances Dennis, Bethamy Linton, Sarah Jane Merchant, Christopher McClelland and Carol Rowling. The space is also shared with approximately 90 recreational and professional artists. Come meet the artists and join them in discussion about their creative practice. Diana Warnock, a former newspaper and radio journalist, went into politics at the age of 52 when she was elected as the State member of Parliament for Perth in 1993. Before entering politics, Diana was an activist for about 30 years for women’s rights and for minorities, and always belonged to many community and voluntary groups, both locally in Perth and nationally. She grew up in the Eastern Goldfields—between Menzies and Leonora—but lived most of her adult life in the city of Perth. Her late husband Bill Warnock, an Irish-Scot, grew up in a Glasgow slum and migrated to Australia in his teens. They both graduated in arts from UWA.

Special Collections

James Hume Nisbet (1849-1923) Scottish born author and artist first visited Australia as a young man in the late 1860s. He visited Australia twice, travelling to Tasmania, New Zealand, and the South Sea Island, painting, sketching, writing poetry and stories. The Friends of the Library purchased four of Nisbet’s sketches currently on display in the foyer Special Collections 2nd Floor Reid Library until April. The display also includes many of his novels and poetry from the Peter Cowan Collection.

Special Collections will be open for Friends from 6.30pm prior to the talk to view the foyer display and objects from the collection in May, June, July, August and November 2020.
