8:30 - CONFERENCE - Combined Biological Sciences Meeting 2012 : Full day meeting for all members of the life sciences community Website | More Information
CBSM aims to promote biological science in Western Australia by encouraging the interaction of scientists, students and industry representatives from all aspects of life science.

The meeting is designed to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and expertise to keep the life sciences in WA at the cutting edge. This annual meeting includes plenary presentations by national and international scientists and in 2012 will incorporate concurrent specialist symposia each with its own keynote speaker and session of local senior scientists.

CBSM is also geared toward students and the development of students among their peers. Several sessions are set aside for student presentations and for many it represents their first chance to present their work in a conference setting. These honours and post-graduate students work in universities, research institutes, and industry around Western Australia. In this way CBSM offers a unique “snapshot” of what is happening in local biological science and now attracts 250-300 delegates every year, with nearly 40 oral presentations, over 70 scientific posters and 30 trade booths. Check out the program at www.cbsmwa.org.au/program.

So where will you be on Friday the 24th of August? Join us at the University Club, The University of Western Australia for CBSM 2012!

19:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - The Expanding Universe : A public lecture with Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt about the discovery that won him and his team the prize. Website | More Information
In this one off very special event for Perth, Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt will describe the discovery that won him and his team the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, and explain how astronomers have used observations to trace the Universe's history back more than 13 billion years, leading them to ponder the ultimate fate of the cosmos.

Where: Octagon Theatre, UWA When: Wednesday September 5th, 7pm (doors open 6:45pm) Cost: Free! Tickets: www.expandinguniverse.eventbrite.com

In 1998 two teams traced back the expansion of the Universe over billions of years and discovered that it was accelerating, a startling discovery that suggests that more than 70% of the cosmos is contained in a previously unknown form of matter, called Dark Energy. In 2011 Professor Brian Schmidt, leader of the High-Redshift Supernova Search Team, was named joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. Brian and his team’s work on the expansion of the Universe fundamentally changed astrophysics – it opened up a whole new area of science and introduced the world to the concept of Dark Energy.

18:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - The End of Growth : Public Lecture with Richard Heinberg More Information
Richard Heinberg, a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute, will deliver a public lecture exploring the close link between the resource/environment and the social/economic components of the present global turmoil.

Richard argues that continuous growth of either population or GDP is impossible in a finite world, with both these drivers of unsustainability having now run up against nature’s biophysical limits. While the conventional wisdom is that we must get ‘the economy’ growing again, Heinberg shows that not only is this the wrong strategy, it is actually making the situation worse.

Nature—according to Richard—is now forcing humanity to a transition, one that is as profound as the transition from gatherer/hunter to settled agriculturalist 10,000 years ago.

Richard is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost Peak Oil educators. His latest book, The End of Growth, follows nine others that deal with declining resources, particularly oil. His books have been translated into eight languages. Richard is a recipient of the M. King Hubbert Award for Excellence in Energy Education (2006). He has appeared in a number of documentaries, the most recent being Earth 2100 (2009)

18:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - A Proper Sense of History : Former Prime Minister John Howard will present The Sir Paul Hasluck Foundation Lecture More Information

He was a strong advocate for our nation’s indigenous people, particularly in health and education. He was a prolific writer, authoring volumes on politics, foreign affairs, public policy and poetry.

Following his graduation from UWA, Sir Paul became a journalist, a diplomat and then a Member of Parliament and a term as Governor-General and remained active in public life following his retirement. Sir Paul died in Perth in 1993.

The Sir Paul Hasluck Foundation was established this year to promote and inform conservative thought and debate of key issues facing Australia. It seeks to celebrate the central insight of Sir Paul’s life: that learning and ideas matter.

The lecture will rotate around Australian states, and will feature a renowned speaker addressing a significant contemporary issue, drawing on Sir Paul’s interests and principles

Hot-on-the-heels of sell-out character cabaret shows in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Edinburgh and New York, Rump Steak showcases Marney's hilarious songwriting and character observations as she presents her first-ever Australian cabaret show as herself… with a little help from celebrity beautician Rosa Waxoffski and friends. 12:00 - SEMINAR - Accomplished Education Researcher Seminar Series : NAPLAN: Driving school improvement or doing the work of the devil? Website | More Information
Controversy continues to surround national student assessment in Australia. However, I argue that testing is neither good nor bad: the devil lies in what people – teachers, school, systems and even parents – do about the tests and the data they generate. I report the experiences of principals, teachers and curriculum consultants in one educational authority to describe how responsibility for interrogating, interpreting and applying data has gradually shifted from an external top-down approach to an internal bottom-up model in a planned, sustained and centrally supported manner, during the past eight years.

19:30 - PERFORMANCE - M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang : A sensational story of lust, politics, and betrayal that challenges ideas of gender, culture and sexuality. Website | More Information
This imaginative and at times shocking play is one of the most celebrated of recent American plays, and the first by an Asian-American to win universal acclaim.

Bored with his routine posting in Beijing, and awkward with women, French diplomat Rene Gallimard is easy prey for the subtle, delicate charms of Song Liling, a Chinese opera star who personifies Gallimard’s fantasy vision of submissive, exotic oriental sexuality. She is to him, the ‘perfect woman,’ yet this Chinese butterfly of his passions is ultimately revealed to be far more than she seems. Gallimard begins a twenty-year affair with ‘her,’ during which time he passes along diplomatic secrets, an act which brings on his downfall and imprisonment.

Weaving into the play many parallels with, and ultimately ironic reversals of, Puccini’s opera, Madame Butterfly, Hwang explores the stereotypes that underlie, distort and threaten relations between Eastern and Western culture, and between men and women. It is powerful metaphor for the exploration of deep themes; the perception of Eastern culture by the West, and the persistent romanticism which clouds and inhibits that perception.

The multi-award-winning play is a brilliant theatrical tour de force, which, in its Broadway production, became an immediate critical and popular success.
