16:00 - SEMINAR - Particle capture by cylindrical collectors in aquatic environmental processes : SESE and Oceans Institute Seminar More Information
Particle capture, whereby suspended particles contact and adhere to a solid surface (a ‘collector’), is an important mechanism for a range processes. The filtering of aerosols and the analysis of particle deposition over heat exchanger surfaces are two examples of mayor importance for industry. In aquatic environmental systems, the rate of particle capture determines the efficiencies of processes such as seagrass pollination, suspension feeding by corals, larval settlement and ’filtering’ by wetland vegetation. Particle laden flows in aquatic systems are typically characterized by low-inertia particles and low collector Reynolds numbers (Re). But flow conditions may well be above Re=1 (the limit of the existing theory), and even above the onset of vortex shedding (i.e. Re > 47 for cylindrical collectors of circular section). We have used two- and three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) to accurately quantify the rate of capture of low-inertiaparticles from Re->0 up to Re =1000. By doing so, we were able to extend the applicability of the existing low-Re analytical expressions for estimating the fluid velocity around a circular cylinder at higher Re; and to describe thespatial variability of the self-induced oscillatory conditions near the leading face of the cylinder when vortex shedding is present, and their influence on particle trajectories and capture efficiency. Our results fill a gap between theory and experiment by providing, for the first time, predictive capability for particle capture by aquatic collectors in wide (and relevant) Reynolds number, particle size and particle density ranges

16:00 - SEMINAR - Spatial Variability in Transitional Response of Vegetation Indices to Surface Temperature : SESE and Oceans Institute Seminar More Information
Vegetation activities sensitively responsd to topological conditions and a changing climate. To better understand vegetation dynamics under varying environmental conditions, we analyse observations of vegetation indices, Land Surface Temperature (LST), air temperature, and precipitation of a deciduous broadleaf forest in Korea over an eleven year period from year 2000 to 2010. While a positive relationship between EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) and LST is established for all seasons, independent of elevation, the EVI-LST relationship exhibits a threshold above which the rate of EVI change over LST changes significantly. This transitional point is associated with the condition that the air temperature triggers the start of the growing season, while soil moisture is more critical during the growing season. The EVI-LST relationship above the threshold exhibits a hysteresis loop, i.e., rising limb differs from falling limb. We identify two types of hysteresis patterns, i.e., a single loop and a twisted loop. The variation in loop width between the ascending and descending paths contains a signature in annual precipitation from the concurrent year. In our analysis, annual precipitation above 1,600 mm is associated with an LST difference of more than 5 oC in the loop width.

The analysis was extended to Bosnia, West Virginia (USA), and Tasmania (Australia) with similar climate regimes i.e. temperate but varying in rainfall patterns and vegetation composition. Inter-annual EVI-LST plots in Kor, Bos, and WV exhibit a similarity in the threshold, but the threshold is absent in the Australian sites. This trait is attributed to extreme low winter temperature in Kor, Bos, and WV, but all sites essentially exhibit a similar response rate, which suggests that vegetation in similar climate regimes displays a convergence in response to temperature, independent of species composition. The annual EVI-LST relationship exhibits hysteresis loops at all study sites. The shapes of the loops well depict annual rainfall variability in Kor but not in Bos and WV. The loop trajectories are very likely to display a photosynthetic response to moisture availability. This response pattern in the EVI and LST relationship further highlights the sensitivity of EVI to assess biophysical conditions of vegetation.

16:00 - SEMINAR - Improving water quality through improved prediction : SESE Seminar More Information
Water quality and aquatic ecology models are widely used to facilitate management and scientific understanding of catchments, lakes, wetlands, rivers, estuaries and marine systems. But how good are these models? In recent years, numerous authors have argued that they have failed to keep up with advances in scientific understanding, remain highly disciplinary, and fail to adequately assess or reign in uncertainty. Here I will discuss current research trends and outline the need for new approaches able to deal with complexity, non-stationarity and uncertainty in future scenarios. Emerging data streams from new monitoring technologies, improved processing of existing sources such as satellite observations, citizen science initiatives, open-access monitoring data initiatives and real-time data portals all hold the potential to improve the way we run and assess environmental models. But the question remains: how can these diverse datasets be brought together in way that allows us to advance model accuracy and more constructively inform management?

Thursday 18
16:00 - SEMINAR - Scales and balances: The use of dimensionless numbers to classify transport, reaction and aquatic connectivity : SESE Seminar More Information
Assessing the potential for transfer of pollutants and nutrients across catchments, water bodies and coastal areas is of primary importance under changing land use and climate. Over the past decade the connectivity/disconnectivity dynamic of a catchment has been related to its potential to export material, however we continue to use multiple definitions of connectivity, and most have focused strongly on physical (hydrological or hydraulic) connectivity. In contrast, this paper constantly focuses on the dynamic balance between transport and material transformation, and defines material connectivity as the effective transfer of material between elements of the hydrological cycle. The concept of exposure timescales is developed and used to define three distinct regimes: I which is hydrologically connected and transport is dominated by advection; II which is hydrologically connected and transport is dominated by diffusion; and III which is materially isolated. The ratio of exposure timescales to material processing timescales is presented as the non-dimensional number, NE, where NE is reaction-specific and allows estimation of relevant spatial scales over which the reactions of interest take place. Case studies within each regime provide examples of how NE can be used to characterise systems according to their sensitivity to shifts in hydrology or hydrodynamics, and gain insight into the biogeochemical processes that are significant under the specified conditions. Finally, we explore the implications of the NE framework for improved water management, and for our understanding of biodiversity, resilience and chemical competitiveness under specified conditions.
