Jane is also a regular contributor to the WA Innovator of the Year program and part of the WA Innovation Centre Team.

Whilst trade and enterprise have led Australia's bilateral relations with China, education promotes mutual understanding and long lasting links. This year's forum will focus on developing Chinese language and cultural competency in schools, universities and industry. His Excellency Mr Chen Yuming, Chinese Ambassador to Australia, will provide the keynote address and a panel of business leaders and education representatives will share their experiences.

“Individual(s) ….embrace a new paradigm for all sorts of reasons ... . Some of these … lie outside the sphere of science entirely. Others depend upon idiosyncrasies of autobiography….” (Kuhn, 1970, p.l52). I will highlight some “idiosyncrasies of autobiography” that have led to enjoying an academic life – the opportunity to research and teach, to construct and communicate knowledge. I plan to illustrate how psychometrics, a field in which I had the opportunity to ignore or embrace an emergent, non-standard statistical paradigm, has lead beyond mathematical modelling to areas such as the philosophy of science, the sociology of knowledge and academic controversy. I plan to also illustrate the challenges in negotiating the complex world of academic research and communication.

The “Design of tailings storage facilities for seismic loading conditions: operational and long term considerations” workshop is being held in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG). This will be a full day workshop and will include presentations from experienced industry practitioners. Topics covered in the workshop will include: status and review of the ANCOLD Guidelines on Design of Dams for Earthquake; selection of the design earthquake; liquefaction assessment of the tailings; analysis and design of dams for earthquakes; and dam break analysis, including discussion of historical dam failures. The workshop is aimed to provide education to both tailings storage facility owners and designers. Applicable case studies and examples will be discussed. Selected workshop notes and presentation slides will be provided to the attendees.

The objective of blasting is to optimise the cost-effectiveness of the excavation process through the fragmentation and displacement of rock from its in situ condition to a highly diggable muckpile. The aim of wall control is to optimise the stability of a rock wall exposed by excavation through the control of fragmentation, displacement, vibration and overbreak. The success of mining and quarrying operations depends on both of these aims being achieved despite the conflict of purpose that may exist. This course will examine the mechanisms and possible extent of damage to the rock structure behind the face from blasting and the influence that has on the stability of pit walls. The course includes consideration of the mechanisms of rock breakage that operate within a blast and considers means of optimising wall damage adjacent to the blast.

The Western Australian Integrated Marine Observing System - Annual Science Meeting will present the collaborative and cross-disciplinary uptake of freely accessible coastal and open ocean datastreams. Marine scientists, modellers and engineers, oceanographers and biologists will find this meeting of interest. The Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems carries out fundamental research in the areas of the mechanics of seabed sediments, offshore geohazards and of offshore foundation and engineering systems and use our expertise to service the offshore petroleum and renewable energy industries. SEM is used widely by researchers to test complex relationships among observed (measured) and latent (unobserved) variables. This course will introduce you to SEM and also covers issues relating to model specification, identification and estimation, assessing model fit (goodness-of-fit criteria), and dealing with problem data.

The course is designed as a comprehensive coverage of applied SEM techniques using the Mplus statistical software package. Mplus offers a general modelling framework that allows both the modelling of cross-sectional and longitudinal data using observed variables that are a combination of continuous and categorical variables.

Particle capture, whereby suspended particles contact and adhere to a solid surface (a ‘collector’), is an important mechanism for a range processes. The filtering of aerosols and the analysis of particle deposition over heat exchanger surfaces are two examples of mayor importance for industry. In aquatic environmental systems, the rate of particle capture determines the efficiencies of processes such as seagrass pollination, suspension feeding by corals, larval settlement and ’filtering’ by wetland vegetation. Particle laden flows in aquatic systems are typically characterized by low-inertia particles and low collector Reynolds numbers (Re). But flow conditions may well be above Re=1 (the limit of the existing theory), and even above the onset of vortex shedding (i.e. Re > 47 for cylindrical collectors of circular section). We have used two- and three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) to accurately quantify the rate of capture of low-inertiaparticles from Re->0 up to Re =1000. By doing so, we were able to extend the applicability of the existing low-Re analytical expressions for estimating the fluid velocity around a circular cylinder at higher Re; and to describe thespatial variability of the self-induced oscillatory conditions near the leading face of the cylinder when vortex shedding is present, and their influence on particle trajectories and capture efficiency. Our results fill a gap between theory and experiment by providing, for the first time, predictive capability for particle capture by aquatic collectors in wide (and relevant) Reynolds number, particle size and particle density ranges

The aim of this course is to introduce you to basic statistics. It will cover descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations); data exploration; basic categorical data analysis; simple linear regression and basic analysis of variance (ANOVA).
