Geologists and geophysicists have to deal with a wide range of data sets and image types acquired from a variety of sources. This talk will give an overview of the image analysis and visualization work being conducted in the Centre for Exploration Targeting.

Image processing topics will include automated detection of linear structures and circular porphyry features in aeromagnetic data, identification of regions of structural complexity, and mapping of outcrop imagery.

Visualisation topics will include presentation of high dynamic range images, use of effective (and ineffective)colourmaps, and visualization of tensor data. Also presented will be a number of image blending tools that we have been developing as a means of integrating information from multiple images or for interactively exploring image parameters such as scale.

Short Bio,

Peter Kovesi is a Research Professor in the Center for Exploration Targeting at UWA. He has been with CET since 2010. Prior to this he had earlier careers in the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and in the School of Mechanical Engineering at UWA. His research interests are in computer vision and visualisation.

Whilst globalisation is written and talked about in a general sense this book seeks to take stock and reflect on the `era of globalisation’ through a series of regional case studies aimed at elucidating examples of globalisation in action. The book will begin with an attempt to define ‘globalisation’ as well as to give a brief history of the theoretical nature of globalisation along with schools of thought about the nature and purpose of the topic. It will also present a brief explanation of how globalisation itself has inadvertently assisted those individuals and organisations who are committed to containing or curtailing that which they refer to as globalisation.

Drishti is a graphics hardware-based direct volume rendering application for real-time exploration and presentation of volumetric data, which can be applied to a variety of fields who use volumetric models.

[email protected] in conjunction with the iVEC Visualisation and Education program invite expressions of interest for hands on training using the Avizo or Amira 3D visualisation and analysis software, to be held during September/October.

The Visualisation Sciences Group (VSG) provided some introductory training to researchers across the iVEC partner institutions in April 2013 and this second round of proposed workshops are intended to build upon that earlier training. In particular this is an opportunity to arrange a session with one of the VSG team for one-on-one training targetting your particular research problem, ideally with a pre-arranged dataset of your own.

W.A. has an economy that is highly dependent on mining and minerals processing. The state, which covers the western third of the Australian continent, has a population of only 2.3 million people (10% of Australia’s total), but is responsible for 46% of Australia’s total exports and 58% of mineral and energy exports. In 2012, there were 975 operating mines and 169 processing plants with more than 50 minerals mined in commercial quantities [1]. Over the last five years, demand from China, Korea and South East Asia has resulted in an state economy with an average annual growth of 4.4% and 15% business investment growth [2]. These mining operations may have many problems. Many of the ores may be unpredictably more difficult or costly to process or handle. As natural samples they can be complicated, they have multiple phases, with variations in particle size, substitution, order and morphology or contain trace phases that often have effects greater than their proportion in the materials would suggest. Until recently, many of these materials would have been examined only on the basis of their chemistry, usually by XRF or ICP-OES. The evolution of better and more flexible diffractometers, especially faster detectors and more robust analysis programs, has greatly reduced the instrument time and analyst time required and subsequently the cost of obtaining good XRD data. Mining and mineral processing companies that would have previously only analysed tens of samples by XRD, if any, can now analyse hundreds or even thousands of samples. Several past and potential future problems will be discussed where lab-based diffraction or synchrotron diffraction are a significant contributor to understanding the problem and providing solutions [1] Government of Western Australia, Dept of Mines and Petroleum. 12:00 - SEMINAR - Accomplished Education Researcher Seminar Series : Considering agency alongside structure in current considerations on child abuse in Catholic educational institutions: historical perspectives Website | More Information
In 2013 a six-member Royal Commission was established in Australia to investigate Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. This is the latest in a large number of such commissions that have been established around the world in recent years. It is clear that it will report many cases of abuse in various educational institutions, many run by the Catholic Church. And yet, like all such reports, I suspect it will – quite understandably – concentrate on agency rather than structure. In other words, while it will seek to document the situation and, quite correctly, lay blame where it needs to be laid, it may not make us any wiser in terms of trying to understand how the abuse could have taken place. Adopting the perspective of the educational historian, I wish to suggest one of many avenues that could be taken in investigations aimed at trying to generate such understanding, specifically in the case of institutions run by the Catholic Church, while recognising that the matter also needs to be addressed in the case of other churches, and for other non-state and state-run institutions.

Breakfast Meeting: Reforming Legal Frameworks for Mining and Economic Development in Africa

Also supported by Minerals and Energy Institute, Centre for Exploration Targeting.

Summary:

Ms. Stephanie Mbombo Bodson, former Congolese diplomat, will lead a discussion on reforming legal frameworks for natural resource development in order to promote economic and social development, environmental sustainability, and improving business ethics. Researchers in the UWA Law School and Centre for Exploration Targeting will also be invited to contribute to the discussion.

Africa has many mineral-rich regions, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and many Australian mining and engineering companies are currently working in Africa or have plans to work there.

Place: University of WA Club, Hackett Entrance 1, Hackett Drive, Crawley. A hot breakfast will be served during the meeting.

Time 7.00 am – 9.00 am

Background of Speaker

Stephanie Mbombo Bodson has a background in European law, diplomacy, international relations between European and African countries, project evaluation and policy development. She graduated from the Free University of Brussels with a Masters in International and European law in 2009. She has also worked on antipersonnel landmine issues and relevant international humanitarian law as it affects Angola and Democratic Republic of Congo. She has worked for the Belgian government and as an intern for the Development Committee of the European Parliament as well as the European Commission. She served as department head in the Congolese Diplomatic Academy, part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Kinshasa where she was responsible for development partnerships as well as fundraising and human resource management.

She has also worked as an assistant to the president of the High Military Court in Kinshasa, working on law reform issues. During the last two years, she obtained much experience as lecturer in European Law (Masters Level) and as the person in charge of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Millennium Development Goals at the United Nations in Morocco. Before she commenced her career in the public sector, she was Secretary General of the Congolese Union of Consumers and worked as a TV program host and journalist in Congo. Ms Mbombo is visiting Western Australia to learn more about the capacity of Australian mining companies interested in working in Africa and to help promote economic development based on income from natural resource development.
