BOOK PUBLICATION Globalisation Revisited: A Global Phenomenon under the Microscope Globalisation has become one of the watchwords of the latter Twentieth and early Twentieth First century. Whilst globalisation is written and talked about in a general sense this book seeks to take stock and reflect on the `era of globalisation’ through a series of regional case studies aimed at elucidating examples of globalisation in action. The book will begin with an attempt to define ‘globalisation’ as well as to give a brief history of the theoretical nature of globalisation along with schools of thought about the nature and purpose of the topic. It will also present a brief explanation of how globalisation itself has inadvertently assisted those individuals and organisations who are committed to containing or curtailing that which they refer to as globalisation.

Pay equity is now firmly on the agenda of government, business and unions. In addition to meeting the National Standard in the Fair Work Act, pay equity is increasingly being considered a business driver.

Yet despite this broad recognition, many companies, practitioners and managers are unclear about what to do about the problem. How do we explain pay equity and the gender pay gap? How do we get our organisations to take notice? Where do we start?

Join Helen Conway, Director Commonwealth Workplace Gender Equality Agency, and Katie-Jeyn Romeyn, Executive General Manager Human Resources St Barbara Limited, as they talk about how companies are tackling the gender pay equity issue.

This action-oriented workshop is focused on making change in workplace pay equity and gender diversity. This cross-industry workshop is designed for those who are interested in championing change within their organisation and looking for practical suggestions on how to address this complex and often contentious area.

Facilitated by the Pay Equity Unit at the WA Department of Commerce, this half day interactive workshop will guide practitioners through the change process from obtaining high level organisational support and undertaking data analysis to implementing evidence-based strategies to increase gender diversity and modify workplace culture. Participants will be provided with practical examples and case studies to support the implementation of pay equity strategies in their organisation.

A series of voluntary follow up sessions will be conducted in the months after the workshops to provide ongoing support and allow participants to share their experiences and ideas with others undertaking the pay equity journey.

The Accelerated Learning Laboratory and the Centre for Safety will be co-hosting an information session for current and prospective postgraduates in the ALL (General Purpose 3, G06) on Monday 23rd September between 1pm and 3pm. Winthrop Professors Sharon Parker and Mark Griffin will present on the Lab and Centre’s current projects, and will offer an insight into the postgraduate research opportunities available to students over the coming twelve months, including potential industry-sponsored PhD scholarships. Other members of staff, and current research students, will also be available to answer questions.

Who should attend?

- Honours students considering postgraduate research in the areas of organisational behaviour, organisations psychology, and/or safety. - Current postgraduate students interested in PhD research and placement opportunities in the same areas. - Third year students looking to pursue honours research in a similar field.

This information session has been specifically designed to dovetail with the wider School and University sessions being held in late September. We encourage all those with an interest in occupational psychology, organisational behaviour, and/or safety to join us, and learn more about our exciting range of opportunities.

In 2013 a six-member Royal Commission was established in Australia to investigate Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. This is the latest in a large number of such commissions that have been established around the world in recent years. It is clear that it will report many cases of abuse in various educational institutions, many run by the Catholic Church. And yet, like all such reports, I suspect it will – quite understandably – concentrate on agency rather than structure. In other words, while it will seek to document the situation and, quite correctly, lay blame where it needs to be laid, it may not make us any wiser in terms of trying to understand how the abuse could have taken place. Adopting the perspective of the educational historian, I wish to suggest one of many avenues that could be taken in investigations aimed at trying to generate such understanding, specifically in the case of institutions run by the Catholic Church, while recognising that the matter also needs to be addressed in the case of other churches, and for other non-state and state-run institutions.

This course is aimed at anyone wishing to improve their survey questionnaires. This course is useful for both people new to questionnaire design and those who have experience and would like to extend their knowledge. It will be a benefit not only for people who anticipate designing a questionnaire in the future, but for those in the role of critiquing commissioned or existing research.

CPA Australia, together with the UWA Business School and Curtin Business School, proudly presents the inaugural Philip Brown Public Lecture in Accounting with Professor Ralph Walkling.

Corporate directors are the direct representatives of shareholders in the boardroom, yet little is known about the process of electing directors and in particular, the impact of shareholder votes. In a sample of over 2500 director elections Professor Walkling explores several questions. The results are at the same time reassuring, troubling, and surprising. This presentation will be relevant to both academic and practicing accountants and company directors. Professor Ralph Walkling is Visiting Professor at the UWA Business School, Founder and Director of the Centre for Corporate Governance and Stratakis Chair in Corporate Governance and Professor of Finance at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Art After Death

A half day symposium exploring legal, financial and other issues affecting artists after death.

Arranged and supported by The University of Western Australia Law School, The University of Western Australia Cultural Precinct, and Artsource.

An artist’s primary concern is developing their professional practise, in whatever guise that might take. But do artists ever ponder what will happen to their work when they are no longer here? Who will decide where their work can be shown, who can reproduce it and for what purposes can it be copied or used?

Like any other personal property, planning for an artist’s artwork, including who will own the work, administer the artist’s copyright and moral rights, and protect their reputation after death is an important but rarely discussed consideration.

Art After Death provides a unique opportunity to hear from prominent legal, accounting and arts professionals about the issues artists and their professional advisors may need to consider when planning for an artist’s will and estate. Participants will also have the rare opportunity to ask questions and raise issues with the panel during the session.

This session will give you the opportunity to learn about the MBA programs on offer, discuss your study options, meet Business School staff and have all your questions answered.

Tristram Carfrae is responsible for the design of an impressive array of award-winning buildings and is regarded internationally as a leading designer of light weight long-span structures.

In collaborating with some of the world’s best architects, he has a reputation for challenging the established way of doing things; for exploring better solutions; and moulding both materials and people to his vision.

Tristram is behind the design of The Water Cube - Beijing’s National Aquatics Centre for the 2008 Olympics. He also boasts an impressive portfolio of other projects including: Helix Bridge, Singapore; AAMI Stadium, Melbourne; 1 Shelley Street, Sydney and Kurilpa Bridge, Brisbane.

He is named as one of Australia’s Top 100 most influential engineers and was Australian Professional Engineer of the Year in 2001.

Tristram will present stories about several projects that he has helped design over the past 30 years that illustrate how architects, engineers and, in some cases, contractors work together to produce unique designs.

R is a free and extremely powerful language and software environment for statistical computing, data analysis, and graphics. The course is designed for those who have no experience with R, but have a basic understanding of statistics. The course will include: Introduction to R: How to install R on your computer; basic R commands, how to use and understand the R help pages. Data: Reading in data and data manipulation; summarising data; basic statistical analysis and fitting linear models. Graphics and output: Basic plotting commands and how to customise your plots; how to export your plots and output in a user-friendly format. Functions: Writing simple functions and flow control structures.
