16:00 - EVENT - Navigating the data revolution in Australian schools Website | More Information
Now, more than ever, parents, school leaders and policy-makers have access to a dizzying array of data on the performance of students, schools and systems.

As data factories, schools also produce new forms of data through the increased use of online and mobile learning apps and platforms. This data revolution, driven by technological advances, has not only made it possible to generate large amounts of data, but also to make it widely accessible.

Navigating this new data-driven world, however, is easier said than done. Without sufficient understanding of what data can or cannot tell us, it is easy to use data in misleading or ineffective ways. This is often the case with data generated from large-scale student assessments such as NAPLAN, school performance data on the My School website, or data presented in the form of ‘league tables’ that rank school ATAR performance. The rapid shift towards online learning also presents complex questions about data privacy and use, and the role of corporate influences in schools. In this context, data-literacy is a crucial skill to posess.

Join us for a Q&A-style panel that brings together policymakers, researchers, school leaders, teachers and parents to reflect on the possibilities and challenges presented by the ‘data revolution’ as we enter the 2020s. Presenters will dissect issues ranging from how parents use data about schools and student achievement, through to how policy makers harness system wide data to reform our education systems. Moderated by Associate Professor Glenn Savage, our panel of experts will engage in productive dialogue regarding the uses, misuses and potentials for the rapidly expanding data climate we inhabit.

Why do we have earthquakes in WA? Why do they happen more in some areas and not at all in others? WA is a long way from a tectonic plate boundary, so our earthquakes are different in nature to those in places like California, Indonesia or Japan.

Join Prof Myra Keep and PhD candidate Sean Standen as they explain the underlying geology of WA (using cake) and how it controls earthquake locations. They will then describe an example of an earthquake from the Wheatbelt, which occurred in Lake Muir in 2018, and see how the cake explains reality! Did we mention cake?

16:00 - SEMINAR - The challenge of managing fall armyworm: a new cross-industry pest in Western Australia : Adjunct Assoc/Prof Helen Spafford from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will discuss the creative and innovative ways in which WA is managing this challenging pest More Information
In the last four years fall armyworm has been found establishing all over the world and it has been problematic to manage. With a large host range and high dispersal capability, when the fall armyworm invaded Australia in January 2020 it was declared un-eradicable. This insect reportedly feeds on over 350 plant species, many of them crop plants. In large numbers the larvae can devastate a crop, seemingly overnight. With a propensity to develop resistance to insecticides, fall armyworm continues to be a challenge for management in its native range and now as a global pest that affects multiple production industries. Western Australia is fall armyworm’s newest home. We will need some creative and innovative thinking to manage this challenging pest.
