19:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - Friends of the Library Speaker : The literary archive in the digital era More Information
Libraries are some of the great tourist destinations of the world. Even in the digital era, people cross the country, cross the world to go to libraries, often to work with or simply read their archival holdings. The long term memory represented by library collections is perhaps more valuable than it has ever been. How are archives, particularly literary archives, changing in the digital era? What does the future of the literary archive look like?

Since 2009 Philip Mead has been Winthrop Professor and inaugural Chair of Australian Literature at the University of Western Australia. 19:00 - VISITING SPEAKER - Friends of the Library Speaker : Engaging with strangers in a violent era: stories from the Solomon Islands More Information
The late nineteenth century was a time of violence throughout the Solomon Islands and nowhere was this violence more devastating than the Western Solomons. Even as they remember this violent past, however, people of the Western Solomons today also remember war captives who were incorporated into the families and clans of their captors. Stories about particular territories throughout the region inevitably focus on how the original people of the place welcomed strangers from across the sea, making them friends and allies. How do we make sense of this unsettling mix of violence and friendship in stories about the past? And how might this challenge the conventional ways that we Australians see our near neighbours?

19:00 - VISITING SPEAKER - Friends of the Library Speaker : Shakespeare: Anonymous or Synonymous? More Information
“Shakespeare: Anonymous or Synonymous?” is a presentation developed in response to a fairly recent film entitled Anonymous in which the authorship of Shakespeare has been challenged. In the nineteenth century, when very little was known about Shakespeare’s life, a number of theories grew up around the authorship of plays attributed to Shakespeare. So much is now known, however, that to most people familiar with the works there is no doubt: quite simply the plays were by William Shakespeare of Stratford. Rather than seeking to validate Shakespeare as author, which is not difficult, the presentation will be more directed towards the phenomenon of conspiracy theories, with special reference to Shakespeare. More specifically, the following question will be addressed: why do some of the world’s literati, including a number of distinguished Shakespearean actors of today, still subscribe to outmoded theories of alternative authorship in the face of powerful arguments to the contrary?

19:00 - VISITING SPEAKER - Friends of the UWA Library Speaker : Summiting Everest More Information
About the Speaker

Margaret Watroba was born in Poland, the youngest of identical twins by 10 mins. As a 12 year old who loved geography and wished to explore other countries and cultures, Margaret discovered she could not realise her dreams in a communist country. It was then that she decided that she would one day live in a free country where the government could never deny her the freedom to travel.

Margaret studied electrical engineering at Poland's prestigious university, AGH in Krakow. She graduated with a Masters degree in Science Electrical Engineering. In 1980 Margaret and her husband fled from communist Poland with their two young daughters. They arrived in Australia in July 1980, with no English, no money and no friends or family. However, with the relief and excitement of having made it to a free country, their positive attitude and hard work saw them both achieve success.

Margaret succeeded in the male dominated engineering profession and is now a principal electrical engineer at Australia's biggest resources company BHP Billiton (Nickel West division). Her passion for sport and travel and her drive and determination to achieve the goals she sets for herself are stronger than ever. She cycles at least 40km every day (and three times that on weekends), runs, swims, participates in fun runs, marathons, cycling time trials and raises money for various charities in the process. She began her mountain climbing adventures a few years ago and has since conquered several mountain peaks of 6000m or more. These include, the Americas' highest peak Aconcagua in the Andes (6962m), she is the first successful female in Australia to summit Manaslu in the Himalayas, the world's eighth highest mountain at 8163m, and technically a more difficult climb than Mt Everest.

In 2011, Margaret conquered her "unfinished business" on Mt Everest. After a gruelling climb in 2010 Margaret missed reaching the summit of Mt Everest by an agonising 50m, due to bad weather forecasts. She returned to Mt Everest in April 2011, and on 12 May she finally made it to the summit despite once again the weather deteriorating and forcing the other members of her team to turn back. In -50 degrees and gale force winds, Margaret stood at the summit of Mt Everest, on top of the world - an achievement which is testament not only to that gruelling climb, but of Margaret's character and personal life journey to date. She is no doubt destined for more adventures, redefining what a person is capable of achieving, no matter what barriers lie ahead.

Through ability and determination Margaret scaled the male dominated engineering profession and the highest mountain on earth. Margaret describes herself as ‘determined, goal oriented and dedicated’ and always states: ‘I/we came to Australia with nothing but I always knew and believed that I can succeed if I put my mind into it‘

18:00 - SCREENING - Pre-release Screening : Free China, the Courage to Believe Website | More Information
“INTENSELY COMPELLING…EXTRAORDINARY.” Karen Curry- Former CNN Bureau Chief New York

The fates of a woman living in Beijing and a man living in New York become inextricably linked because of a common conviction…

The multi-award winning “Free China: The Courage To Believe” tells the story of a mother and former Communist Party member, Jennifer Zeng, who along with more than 70 Million Chinese were practicing a belief that combined Buddhism and Daoism until the Chinese Government outlawed it. The Internet police intercepted an email and Jennifer was imprisoned for her faith. As she endured physical and mental torture, she had to decide: does she stand her ground and languish in jail, or does she recant her belief so she can tell her story to the world and be reunited with her family? A world away, Dr. Charles Lee, a Chinese American businessman, wanted to do his part to stop the persecution by attempting to broadcast uncensored information on state controlled television. He was arrested in China and sentenced to three years of re-education in a prison camp where he endured forced labor, making amongst other things, Homer Simpson slippers sold at stores throughout the US.

As political scandals surface and tensions rise along with more than one hundred and fifty thousand protests occurring each year inside China, this timely documentary highlights the issue of unfair trade practices with the West, organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience and widespread forced/slave labor. The film also highlights how new Internet technologies are helping bring freedom to 1.3 billion people in China and other repressive regimes throughout the world.

“Free China” is a co-production between NTD Television, and World2Be Productions. It is scheduled for worldwide theatrical and online release in June 2013.

Special Private Screenings Include: The US Congress, European Parliament, Google Headquarters.

19:00 - VISITING SPEAKER - Friends of the UWA Library Speaker : The Hackett Buildings on the Crawley Campus More Information
Presentation Synopsis

John Winthrop Hackett and the Hackett Memorial Buildings

John Winthrop Hackett (1848-1916) was born in Ireland, emigrated to the eastern states of Australia, and then moved to Western Australia. He became a member of the Legislative Assembly, worked to achieve federation, and with others achieved the creation of The University of Western Australia. He was knighted in 1911, by coincidence in the year in which an Act of Parliament established this university. After his death his estate was ably managed by Alfred Langler, and in 1926 the sum of £425,000 became available to build the Winthrop Hall and associated buildings. The architectural features of these buildings are described in the recently published book The Hackett Memorial Buildings at the University of Western Australia, written by the speaker, and will be illustrated in this lecture.

BOOK PUBLICATION Globalisation Revisited: A Global Phenomenon under the Microscope Globalisation has become one of the watchwords of the latter Twentieth and early Twentieth First century. Whilst globalisation is written and talked about in a general sense this book seeks to take stock and reflect on the `era of globalisation’ through a series of regional case studies aimed at elucidating examples of globalisation in action. The book will begin with an attempt to define ‘globalisation’ as well as to give a brief history of the theoretical nature of globalisation along with schools of thought about the nature and purpose of the topic. It will also present a brief explanation of how globalisation itself has inadvertently assisted those individuals and organisations who are committed to containing or curtailing that which they refer to as globalisation.
