17:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - Shale Gas and Fracking: Environmental Saviour or Devil Incarnate? Website | More Information
A public lecture by Derek Elsworth, Professor of Energy and Geo-Environmental Engineering at Pennsylvania State University & 2012 UWA Institute of Advanced Studies Professor-at-Large.

Shale gas is just one of a variety of approaches that may be taken to reduce the carbon footprint of energy use. Fuel switching to the utilization of low-carbon natural gas has proven a natural and economically driven selection. This is promoted by the new-found abundance of large gas deposits in unconventional reservoirs made accessible by recently-improved methods of recovery from these very challenging environments. However utilization requires “fracking” of the low permeability reservoirs, that by its very nature is disruptive and to related concerns for the protection of the environment.

This talk will explore the broad range of issues related to gas production from unconventional resources in the broadest possible context. This will include discussion of environmental protection, energy security and economics, all writ large, at this important nexus of environment, energy and economics.

16:00 - SEMINAR - CWR Presents: : An integrated system for high quality water recovery and wastewater treatment Website | More Information
An integrated system for water recovery from most known water resources has been developed.

It is innovative, standard, more economical and simpler than the current operating systems in use for wastewater treatment coupled with water recovery and it uses presently available technologies.

The system is the culmination of more than 25 years of practical and research work in the water & wastewater treatment and hydrometallurgy, with the desire of making the water and wastewater treatments more effective and streamlined.

It suggests a departure from today’s approach to wastewater treatment, by advocating for a shift of the prime purpose of the water treatment from pollutant removal to water recovery, giving a new interpretation to the existing technologies and consolidating existing established engineering advancements and expertise.

PS* This seminar is free and open to the public, no RSVP required.

****All Welcome****

9:00 - SEMINAR - Microbiology & Immunology Seminar Series: A Negative Future: The Interaction Between Mechanisms of Virulence and Resistance in Clinically Significant Nosocomial Gram Negatives : PhD proposals More Information
Mr Jarrad Hall will give a talk on "A Negative Future: The Interaction Between Mechanisms of Virulence and Resistance in Clinically Significant Nosocomial Gram Negatives" in the Microbiology & Immunology Seminar room, Friday, 4th May 2012 at 09:00am. In 2011 a novel, emerging rarely encountered carbapenemase (OXA-181) was detected. There has been limited spread of this resistance determinant outside of the sub-continent to date. However, several outbreaks of the parental OXA-48 carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae have occurred in Europe. Through the use of molecular biology the project will examine W.A.'s risk of importing highly resistant nosocomial Gram negative bacteria and the relationship between virulence and resistance in these organisms.

9:25 - SEMINAR - Microbiology & Immunology Seminar Series: Characterisation of a successful triple immunotherapy for the treatment of Mesothelioma. : PhD proposal More Information
Ms Shruti Krishnan will give a talk on "Characterisation of a successful triple immunotherapy for the treatment of Mesothelioma" in the Microbiology & Immunology Seminar room, Friday, 4th May 2012 at 09:25am. Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a cancer of the pleura and less commonly of the peritoneum, tunica vaginalis and pericardium. One particular obstacle preventing tumour clearance by the immune system is the presence of regulatory T-cells (Tregs). These Tregs are prevalent within murine and human mesotheliomas and their removal results in tumour growth inhibition with the release of anti-tumour effector T cells from immunosuppression. Our work has focused on targeting multiple mechanisms of immune suppression in the AE17 murine model of mesothelioma. Specifically, we targeted the depletion of Tregs, CTLA4 and TGF-beta; using monoclonal antibodies and soluble receptors. We found the triple immunotherapy resulted in tumour clearance in 46% (13/28, from three independent experiments) of the mice treated; with the generation of memory T cells (CD4+CD44+T cells) that prevented tumour re-emergence on rechallenging the cured mice with the original innoculum. Though the triple immunotherapy looks promising with the complete eradication of the established tumours and developing immunological memory; optimization of this approach will likely yield an even better response rate.

18:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - The Female Body as Political Body: Rape, War and the Nation Website | More Information
A public lecture by Ruth Seifert, Professor of Sociology, University of Applied Sciences, Regensburg, Germany.

Rape and sexual torture of women in times of war and crisis is not a new phenomenon. However it was only recently, following reports of mass rapes perpetrated during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, that the use of rape and sexual violence as a weapon of war has been widely discussed.

It has largely been assumed that there is a continuum between civilian and wartime rapes, but research has shown that war rapes can be considered to be part of a cultural script that comprises a variety of messages.

In the course of this debate, gender-specific violence has been primarily discussed as a human rights issue, culminating in UN resolution 1325 in 2000, the first formal and legal document from the Security Council dealing with violence against women in the context of armed conflict. This issue has been addressed many times since with the most recent UN resolution 1960 in 2010.

Despite the strong efforts to problematize, scandalize and persecute these atrocities, reports of the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war keep emerging. Most recently, scattered news has emerged from Libya indicating that sexual violence is being used as a tool of war, prompting International Court Special Prosecutor Ocampo to launch investigations into these accounts.

This lecture will examine why sexual violence appears to be such a pervasive and effective weapon of war, what cultural symbolisms are drawn on in its enactment, and what theoretical approaches may be useful in furthering understanding of this phenomenon.

Cost: Free, no RSVP required.
