|
More Information
|
The Seminar:The Raine Study is one of the largest successful prospective cohorts of pregnancy, childhood, adolescence and now young adulthood in the world. It began in 1989 at King Edward Memorial Hospital with the recruitment of 2,900 pregnant women in early pregnancy. These families were followed through pregnancy and 2,868 children born to the mothers have been reviewed in detail at ages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 14, 17, 18, 20 and now at 23 years of age. Each member of the cohort has over 95,000 measures of health and disease and demographic data as well as information on more than 2.5 million genetic variants.
The prospective longitudinal design of the Raine Study allows causal pathways of complex conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory and psychiatric disease to be investigated. The Raine Study has already contributed to scientific research in many ways and led to novel discoveries across a range of disciplines, particularly childhood diseases.Since its inception in 1989, research studies using the Raine Study have generated more than $12.6 million from 27 grant applications from 12 funding bodies, the largest funding ($9.5 million) coming from the National Health & Medical Research Council. Research output has been increasing exponentially with over 130 research papers published in the past 3 years.
The Raine Study is now moving into the adult years. At 23 years old, the cohort is well placed to assess the effects of the disturbing transition of obesity onset from the middle-aged population to younger age groups. By engaging with researchers in the fields of adult health and medicine the Raine Study has the potential to provide unprecedented data on the prevalence, clinical picture and risk factors for disease in early adulthood and beyond.

18:30 - VISITING SPEAKER - An Introduction to the Western Arnhem Land Song Project : Special Guest Lecture by Linda Barwick
|
Website |
More Information
|
Linda Barwick from the University of Sydney will present a special guest lecture introducing the Western Arnhem Land Song Project Collection on 21 August at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. Linda Barwick will present work undertaken by her research team on the Western Arnhem Land Song Project (WALSP) which documents the diversity of language and music from over fifty repertories associated with thirty four different languages and dialects, including recordings by Ronald Berndt at Warruwi (South Goulburn Island) in the 1960s. The repertories mostly belonging to the public dance-song genre named kun- borrk (Kunwinjku) or manyarti (Mawng), consist of discrete song texts inherited or received in dream by known composers. Many of the repertories include dialects that are no longer spoken—as well as untranslatable ‘spirit languages’ used extensively in songs throughout the project area. The team worked with singers and their families to transcribe, gloss and translate the song texts, providing a rich documentation of these highly valued cultural forms for future generations. This lecture is free to attend however, RSVP is essential to [email protected] or 08 6499 3707 by 20 August 2013. Visit the event website for more information:

12:00 - SEMINAR - Accomplished Education Researcher Seminar Series : Publishing to the Index

More Information

In education, the role of assessment is ubiquitous and indispensable. However, even though it is intended to enhance performance, because it has the potential to corrupt learning, ‘teaching to the test' has a pejorative connotation. In academe, a relatively new phenomenon of being assessed by one index or another has similarly become ubiquitous and indispensable. By analogy to the corruption of learning by 'teaching to the test' to enhance performance, I will consider the potential for corruption of research by 'publishing to the index' to enhance performance. I will also outline some conditions that might resist such corruption.
12:00 - TALK - CAREERS MONTH - INTERNATIONAL CAREERS WEEK: Developing Leadership Skills : Learn about ways to identify and develop leadership skills and how to apply them in both your work and daily life.

13:00 - Colloquium - To be (broad) or not to be (broad) : To be (broad) or not to be (broad): The dynamics of attentional focusing
|
More Information
|
Focused visual attention is a mechanism by which relevant visual information is selectively prioritised for further processing. Given this vital role, focused attention is essential for the efficient visual perception of a world that is not only richly varied, but also continually changing. Great strides have been made in understanding the shifting of focused attention from one object or location to another, but relatively little is known about an independent and equally critical component of attentional control – attentional focusing.
The term attentional focusing refers to the fact that the focus of attention flexibly expands and contracts in spatial extent to encompass larger or smaller objects or regions of space. Despite the relative lack of research on focusing, it profoundly affects many aspects of visual perception and has substantial ramifications for cognition. In this seminar, I will present data on three inter-related aspects of attentional focusing: the spatiotemporal dynamics of focusing, object representations and their role in focusing, and the consequences of focusing on visual processing.
