16:00 - PUBLIC TALK - Maths & Stats Colloquium : Deciding that two groups are the same: an update on group isomorphism More Information
Groups are mathematical objects that abstractly capture the concept of symmetry. Two groups are isomorphic if they essentially describe the same data, but they might be given with respect to different frames of reference. More specifically, two groups are isomorphic if there is a 1-to-1 correspondence between their elements that preserves the group operations. The group isomorphism problem is a decision problem that asks whether two given groups are isomorphic. This problem is of interest in theoretical computer science (with focus on the complexity of the problem) and in computational group theory (with focus on practical algorithms). My talk will survey some known results and comment on some recent new results, covering both complexity theory and practical applications to computer algebra systems.

17:45 - FREE LECTURE - In Conversation with Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia, Mr Vasyl Myroshnychenko : The UWA Defence and Security Institute invites you to attend an In Conversation public event featuring Ukraine’s newly installed Ambassador to Australia His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko. Ambassador Myroshnychenko is focussed on enhancing Ukraine-Australia bilateral relations through military cooperation, trade and investment, culture, education and tourism. Ambassador Myroshnychenko will discuss his reflections on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the reaction of the international community, and Australia-Ukraine relations. While this event will inevitably have considerable focus on the current situation in Ukraine, Ambassador Myroshnychenko is also interested in exploring how Western Australia and Ukraine might work together more closely in a post-war reconstruction phase, and over the long term through increased bilateral trade and investment. This public event will take place in the theatre-auditorium located at The University Club of Western Australia. Please register your attendance as places are limited.

19:00 - PERFORMANCE - The Duel : Presented by West Australian Opera in association with UWA Music Website | More Information
In 1786 a standoff was held in one of the world’s most lavish palaces. Joseph II (Holy Roman Emperor) set his composers a challenge, pitting the Italian opera style against the German ‘singspiel’. With both pieces performed on the same night, more than pride was at stake. The winner would be feted with commissions and patrons; the loser, fighting for scraps.

In one corner, the established Antonio Salieri set an opera buffa entitled Prima la musica e poi le parole (First the Music, then the Words), and in the other corner the upstart Wolfgang Mozart flew the nationalistic flag with his comedy Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario).

For this re-creation, we invite you to get up close and personal in the intimate surrounds of Government House Ballroom with stages at either end, dinner with your friends and a time machine back to the eighteenth century. Decide for yourself who wins – Mozart or Salieri?
