In referring to the history of ideas,"the Begriffsgeschichte“ and literary studies the paper examines the parallels between the pre-1800 urban historiography and the literary genre of early modern utopia as introduced and developed by Thomas More, Francis Bacon, Johann Valentin Andreae and/or Tommaso Campanella. The analysis of mostly Central European urban chronicles, burgher diaries and panegyrical texts discloses the strong presence of a normative vision of an idealized community which was projected, however, into the life of an existing city.

18:00 - PUBLIC LECTURE - Medieval Edens: Gender, Power and Death in Paradise : CMEMS / PMRG Public Lecture Website | More Information
This lecture considers what some of the greatest minds of the Middle Ages imagined life would have been like if the Fall from Eden had not occurred, and what those imaginations told them about life in their present existence. This harking-back to Paradise was essentially a search for origins: by finding the starting-points of forms of behaviour, ideals, institutions and sacraments, the rationale of God’s creation could, it was believed, be better understood. Beginning with the views of the controversial John Wyclif, I shall investigate what several major schoolmen thought the Eden narrative meant for three crucial aspects of the human condition: gender, death and power.

17:30 - EVENT - Skywest Public Lecture : Who Owns this Dance? - Creativity, Social Recognition and Dance Amongst Saibai Islanders Website | More Information
What do we mean when we recognise a person, object, idea or practice as ‘creative’? Creativity is a notoriously difficult concept to pin down, more easily recognised as a personal quality than an abstraction. In recent discussions of Indigenous intellectual property rights, creativity is perhaps not something that is intrinsic to a person but indicative of wider knowledge sharing practices. Dr Richard Davis explores how male dancers from the Saibai Island in northwest Torres Strait seek recognition and renown through creation of dance. He shows how these men achieve lasting recognition through innovations in style, without holding exclusive control over the creation. Dr Richard Davis is an Assistant Professor in Anthropology and Sociology at The University of Western Australia. In addition to his scholarly work he has worked in the areas of native title and cultural heritage assessment. Dr Davis has held several academic positions and written and edited numerous publications including Woven Histories, Dancing Lives: Identity, Culture, History and Torres Strait Islanders.

16:45 - SEMINAR - WUN Virtual Seminar: 'Uyghur perceptions of inequality in the context of social change in Xinjiang' : Worldwide Universities Network - Contemporary China Center videoconference More Information
This presentation examines Uyghur subjective class status in Ürümchi, China. Existing studies have identified socioeconomic status and psychological well-being measures as two major determinants of class identification. This study shows that Uyghur ethnic consciousness also affects their choices of class labels. This is partly because Uyghur ethnic consciousness is related to Uyghur-Han inequalities and Uyghurs compare themselves with Han Chinese unfavourably while defining their class positions. Data are drawn from a mass survey (N = 900) conducted in Ürümchi in 2007.
