CONCERT: UWA Music presents the Song of the Earth
|
|
Internationally celebrated artists Caitlin Hulcup (mezzo soprano) and Florian Thomas (tenor) perform alongside UWA staff, students and members of Perth’s Darlington Ensemble in a performance of Schoenberg’s rarely heard arrangement of 'Das Lied von der Erde' by Mahler.
This monumental symphonic song cycle, composed for tenor, alto and orchestra reflects on life, death, and the eternal cycle of nature, inspired by classical Chinese poetry.
Arnold Schoenberg began to arrange Das Lied von der Erde for chamber orchestra (for his Society for Private Musical Performances), reducing the orchestral forces to string and wind quintets, plus percussion, and calling for piano, celesta and harmonium to supplement the harmonic texture. Schoenberg never finished this project, but the arrangement was completed by German composer and conductor Rainer Riehn in 1980.
Don't miss your chance to hear this rarely heard masterpiece!
