UWA Music presents the 2023 Callaway Lecture : Neal da Costa Peres and Daniel Yeadon Other events...
The Callaway Lecture is one of the most prestigious events on the Conservatorium of Music calendar. Over the last three decades, a host of distinguished speakers have taken to the podium to deliver their thoughts on subjects as broad ranging as the effects of music on the mind, and the place of music in the arts.

Neal da Costa Peres & Daniel Yeadon

Mozart Reimagined – using practice-led methods to renew identities and sound worlds in classical music

The first half of the 20th-century saw unprecedented change in ‘classical’ music performance, culminating in a ‘modern’ style in which the notation came to be considered sacrosanct, arguably for the first time ever. This text-literal ‘classicised’ style remains pervasive and has stultified performers and audiences alike. This Callaway lecture will highlight a novel reading of Mozart’s Piano Concerto K. 488 with Neal Peres Da Costa as piano soloist and Daniel Yeadon as lead cellist in the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra on period instruments, which used innovative methods to reignite artistic agency and unlock the modernist sound of Mozart.
