This presentation discusses the draft of paper on Franciscan senior high schools in Indonesia to see
how Franciscan philosophy regarding the environment is transformed into practice in Franciscan
schools. Using mainly qualitative data gained from participant observation in two Franciscan senior
high schools in Bekasi and Jakarta and interviews with leaders, teachers and students, the
presentation then examines how teachers and students put the philosophy and teachings into
practice. Students and teachers have a clear Franciscan identity, and the presentation explores what
this means in terms of religious beliefs and attitudes towards the environment as well as motivation
for pro-environment practices. Finally, the presentation explains the students’ reported
environmental practices, including the challenges and the limitations.
