How do you make society a safer place in an interconnected and autonomous world?

With the pace of technology development we’re increasingly living in an interconnected and autonomous world. This is reflected in the fact that it took more than a century for society to progress from the industrial revolution and age of steam to the computer age, but only decades for transition to the data and digital age we’re now entering. Disruptive technologies such as robotics and autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, big data and nanotechnology are going to rewrite the landscape as we know it. While promising cultural, economic and social benefits, they will present new risks to safety, security and privacy, as well reputational and resilience dangers to organisations that get it wrong. Lloyd’s Register (LR) recognises this and through both its charitable (Lloyd’s Register Foundation) and trading company arms, is looking over the horizon at such emerging technologies and working with the best minds in the world on how you assure the safety of such complex, interconnected and autonomous systems. The oration talk will explain the unique structure of LR and how it enables the Foundation to support world-leading research, education and public outreach, with particular emphasis on the work we’re doing in the field of assuring the safety of robotic and autonomous systems.
