In the post-Soviet world, the traditional practice of exile politics has become a rarity, with the overseas Chinese democracy movement becoming the leading case of the remaining communist party-states. This movement, scantly studied in the literature of both exile politics and Chinese politics/international relations, is composed of many loosely connected activists and organizations in exile. This presentation is focused on the starkly deteriorating operational environment confronting those struggling dissidents and their organizations. This presentation looks into the rapid waning of the Western interest in democracy/human rights promotion in China, the party-state’s effective (if not increasingly perfectionist) anti-exile strategy, a strengthened sentiment of conformity among the overseas Chinese communities (migrants and students alike) to Beijing’s political line of the day, and Taiwan’s de-Sinification campaign and loss of interest in its traditional ideological rivalry with the mainland.
