UWA Albany Public Lecture : Waves, Wind and Tides: harnessing the opportunities of renewable energy from the oceans |

Renewable energy currently contributes 14% of power in Australia, the majority from hydro, wind, bioenergy and solar. Increasingly attention is turning to the opportunity of producing renewable energy from the oceans. Wave, tidal and floating wind power are all possibilities, but research and investment is needed if we are to explore them further. The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a global leader in ocean engineering, and has secured State Government funding to establish a UWA Wave Energy Research Centre in Albany. This Centre will focus on cutting edge research to support the Carnegie Clean Energy Ltd project to develop a 1MW wave energy pilot. In the longer term, the UWA Centre will become a knowledge hub for the wave, tidal and offshore wind energy industries. This public lecture will explore energy from the oceans, the challenges and opportunities, and how the new UWA Wave Energy Research Centre will contribute.
