Evolving Chinese Heritage Landscapes: Digital Visualisation and Tunpu Cultures of Emotion : A CMEMS/Lund University Seminar Other events...
Cultural heritage landscapes are value-laden concepts informed by a range of environmental, social, psychological, and emotional properties. This project examines the changing heritage landscapes of the unique Tunpu people, both within the context of recent digital conservation efforts in regional China and the emergence of emotions studies as an evaluative tool within non-Western settings. Using 3D digital data sets from the Ming-era ‘Bao’s Village’ and its hinterland in Guizhou Province, we can adopt an exploratory history of emotions perspective with material objects and ecological features; revealing shifting interpersonal relationships, experiential or praxiological engagement with the landscape, and distinct emotional registers within Tunpu culture.

These emotional valences include well-being derived from community collectivism, expressed through environmental management and intergenerational responsibility for irrigation sources; and anxieties about foreign incursion into Tunpu townscapes, reflected within the town’s distinctive militaristic architectural features. Here, tangible, material heritage contains intangible emotional resonances of cohesion or conflict. The application of an interpretive, emotions-based framework – while acknowledging the primacy of local knowledge and Chinese cultural constructs such as Taoist principles of Feng Shui – supplements conventional heritage interpretation. These new perspectives augment our understanding of emotions and emotional responses in conservation and digitisation projects, and highlight the role of 3D technologies in contemporary Chinese discourses around heritage management, cultural memory and identity.
