Forensic Anthropology in the modern era : School of Anatomy, Physiology & Human Biology Seminar Series Other events...
Unfortunately this event has been cancelled.

-----------------

The Seminar: Research, training and professional practice in forensic anthropology has been represented at UWA for over a decade – the most recent culmination of the latter is the formation of the Centre for Forensic Anthropology, situated within the Faculty of Science. There are many global issues facing the discipline, which has had to adjust to a new era of intense judicial scrutiny. This has been a significant driver in the development of new methods to supplement traditional practices. My intention for this presentation is to introduce the audience to the modern role of the forensic anthropologist, and by association introduce the newly formed Centre and describe its function in providing research, education and professional services both nationally and internationally. Whilst not focusing on one specific research project, I will give a brief overview of our primary research programme and talk about some of our more interesting activities that have included training Cambodian scientists at Choeung Ek (Killing Fields) through to our annual field school in at Lazaretto Nuovo, in Venice, Italy.

The Speaker: Daniel Franklin has an honours degree in bioarchaeology and a PhD in physical anthropology. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Centre for Forensic Anthropology, School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. His research involves the validation and exploration of alternative approaches for the quantification of skeletal biology and to advocate its potential applications in the forensic sciences. He has published extensively in a variety of journals, most recently in the Journal of Forensic Sciences; Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology; American Journal of Physical Anthropology; and the International Journal of Legal Medicine.
