A common complaint is that data collected by archaeology consultants too often remains buried in the 'grey literature'. This project was developed with funding from Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) to research the archaeological evidence recorded in the course of developing the Christmas Creek-Cloudbreak mine in the eastern Chichester Range, with the explicit aim of communicating the results both to the Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners and in academic forums. From a comprehensive survey and site recording program of 430 km2 in the ranges and adjacent alluvial plains between 2006 and 2015, some 2000 archaeological sites were recorded. Most of these places are surface artefact scatters, but also recorded were thousands of isolated artefacts, and nineteen rock shelters yielded cultural material with a temporal context. This large dataset offers an opportunity to explore assumptions about how Pilbara surface archaeology is reported on and interpreted in the compliance context, as well as to investigate issues of scale and resolution in the recording and analysis of surface data and to compare patterning at the scale of site, landscape and project area. In this paper we reinterpret this archaeological data as part of a wider Nyiyaparli taskscape, focusing on how landscapes are perceived and experienced not as backdrops or scenery, but in terms of the collection of activities carried out in those places.
