Archaeology Seminar Series : Proud Privateers and Calculating Kings in the early 17th century Other events...
On the 9th of October 1616 was listed the goods of the English privateer Thomas Tucker, who was convicted of piracy and hanged in Hensingør. Events leading up to his capture in the North Atlantic and execution in Helsingør are more exiting and unbelievable than any movie script, involving a well-known historical figures and events that include all layers of society from kings to sailors, pirates in Morocco, ties to the discovery of the West passage, and to travels to the West Indies. The sources for this story have been uncovered in archives and archaeological records, and the unfolding is an ongoing project with ties to maritime archaeology and maritime history. Dr. Jette Linaa is Head of the Danish Research Council for the Humanities “Urban Diaspora” project studying 16th & 17th century Dutch migrants, Curator of Historical Archaeology at Moesgaard Museum, and Lecturer in Maritime Archaeology at University of Southern Denmark.
