Title: Islam and Lived Experiences of Muslims in the Philippines
For the first time in history, the Philippines has elected a new President who hails from Mindanao, home to indigenous Muslims. President Rodrigo R. Duterte, who has had good relationships with the liberation front leaders, is expected to fully support the peace process with the Muslim liberation fronts. His administration has announced a road map to peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front which will have two simultaneous tracks: a move to establish federalism in the country, involving constitutional amendment, and consolidating all peace agreements and legislation affecting the Muslim communities.
As the world is engaged in the prevention and countering of violent extremism, following the expansion of ISIS influence and attacks, this paper will share the Philippine experience on the role that religion and the religious have played in shaping lived experiences of Muslims in the country as well as lessons that can be learned as the world confronts violent extremism operating under a religious flag.
