Poetry and painting have been compared since antiquity. John Hollander (echoing Simonides) has said that ‘Works of art are silent; poetry speaks its mind’.
In this workshop critically acclaimed poet Paul Hetherington will demonstrate how visual imagery activates and energises poetry. You will also share some of the ways in which painting and poetry make use of related artistic approaches and strategies.
You will have the opportunity to reference key works of visual art (provided by the workshop leader) and to consider how the poetic imagination works visually.
Bring two of your most imagistic poems along and prepare to write an additional work that ‘shows’ rather than ‘tells’.
Refreshments will be provided. Presented by UWA Publishing.
