Bayliss Seminar Series : Development and validation of a methodology for the determination of persistent organic pollutants in human milk Other events...
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are synthetic chemicals that are released into the environment. They bio-accumulate in the adipose tissue stores in the human via inhalation, ingestion or dermal adsorption. During milk synthesis, these bio-accumulated pesticides are secreted into the milk. This process decreases the mother’s body burden, however it causes concern to health professionals regarding levels delivered to the breastfed infant. Monitoring is therefore essential to gauge the maternal environment, as raised levels of POPs will impact the full life span. There is limited current information on the levels and types of POPs present in human milk throughout the lactation cycle. Moreover, the current methods for POPs determination are time- and labor intensive, and also require large consumption of solvent and human milk. Therefore, the objective of this project was to develop a new methodology to identify and quantify POPs in human milk, and evaluate the potential effects of the detected pesticides on infant growth outcomes.
