PUBLIC TALK: Sleep Deprivation and its Health Consequences
|
|
In this public lecture, sleep physician and researcher Matthew Naughton will highlight the importance of quality sleep and the health consequences of sleep deprivation.
Sleep is a crucial ingredient for a healthy life, in addition to a sensible diet and regular activity. In this current world of 24/7 demands it can be too easy to forget the need for healthy sleep. Good quality and quantity of sleep is essential for mental well-being, alertness and performance, and is an important factor in weight control and heart function.
Over the past 20 years there has been an explosive growth in our understanding of the health effects of poor quality or quantity of sleep. For example, we now know that sleep disorders such as snoring and sleep apnoea are associated with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Matthew Naughton is a Melbourne physician with a clinical and research interest into the relationship between sleep and heart disease which began 30 years ago.
This lecture is co-sponsored by the UWA Institute of Advanced Studies, Australasian Sleep Association, Sleep Health Foundation and Centre for Sleep Science at UWA.
