High-energy X-ray beams have become the principal tool for radiation oncology in Australia and are used in treatment of almost half of all cancer patients. Protons and heavy ions offer an alternative with particularly appealing characteristics for the treatment of specific cancer types and in paediatrics. However, there are no such facilities available in Australia. A/Prof Jackson is a Radiation Oncologist who has led the charge to acquire proton therapy facilities in Australia. He will describe the physical characteristics of protons that make them appealing for use in therapy, specific disease sites and indications for using protons together with the outcomes of international trials, and discuss Australia’s path to becoming proton-equipped.
Light refreshments provided after the presentation in the Perkins Institute foyer.
