Africa Day 2016 : The Origins and Future of African Unity Other events...
AFRICA DAY is celebrated internationally each year on 25 May in commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. Among the OAU's key purposes was to promote Pan-Africanism, integration and unity between Africa's newly independent states during the era of decolonisation. 53 years later, the OAU has been transformed into the African Union (AU) and, while political contexts, dynamics and institutions have evolved, African unity remains a core objective. As we celebrate Africa Day 2016, we invite you to consider the origins and future opportunities and challenges for African unity.
