Asian Studies Seminar Series : Understanding Academic Cheating in Senior Secondary Schools in Indonesia and Its Relation to Corruption Other events...
Academic cheating is a serious problem for many countries, with the highest prevalence of the misconduct found in the senior secondary level of school (Craig & Evans, 1990; Schab, 1991; Anderman & Midgley, 2004; Finn & Frone, 2004). In Indonesia, academic cheating is mainly spotted in the national examination, which is organised for students in the 9th and 12th grade. While extensive attention has been given to cheating in the national examination, other behaviours that may actually have developed into a pervasive cheating problem, have been overlooked. Indonesia is considered a country with a systemic corruption problem (Transparency International, 2014; Transparency International, 2015), and the Indonesian government has indicated that the country’s corruption is caused by, among other things, academic cheating. A number of policies have been developed to address academic cheating, with the implementation of the National Examination Integrity Index (NEII) the most recent intervention. As yet, there is almost no research on cheating in Indonesian schools, nor on how schools are dealing with the problem, nor on how students, teachers, and principals are being affected by policies, and in particular the Index.

This presentation will introduce my doctoral research project, which focuses on prevalent forms of cheating in Indonesian schools and schools’ response to government policies. The presentation will detail the data collection process, survey the key literature, and introduce the central research aim of the dissertation: to identify why academic cheating and the rampant culture of corruption in Indonesia are related to each other.
