Sea-level Changes During Past Centuries : The 2016 Joseph Gentilli Memorial Lecture Other events...
The 2016 Joseph Gentilli Memorial Lecture by Professor Roland Gehrels, Chair in Physical Geography at the University of York.

In this lecture Professor Gehrels will explain how salt marshes are capable of recording small sea-level variations and will outline the range of methods that are used to provide precise chronologies for these records. He will discuss sea-level reconstructions for coastal sites in Tasmania, New Zealand, eastern North America and Europe. These records provide insights into the mechanisms that drive sea-level changes on regional and global scales. Many salt-marsh records show that around the turn of the 20th century the rate of sea-level rise started to exceed the background value that prevailed during preceding centuries.

This annual lecture was established in 2005 to honour the memory and intellectual legacy of an influential and long-serving scholar, Joseph Gentilli (1912-2000). During his long and distinguished career, Joseph Gentilli helped to bring about a comprehensive understanding of the climates of Australia.
