Title: Key Elements of Human Motivation: Research and Practice Based in Self- Determination Theory
Abstract:
An expanding body of research shows that people's quality of engagement, performance, and well-being are strongly affected by how autonomous or controlled their motives for behaving are, and the psychological need satisfactions they experience. Self-determination theory (SDT) details how the styles and strategies of motivators from parents and teachers, to coaches, and health-care professionals can promote or undermine more autonomous engagement and the positive consequences that follow from it. In this talk Professor Ryan will provide an overview of SDT with special emphasis on how autonomy relates to quality of relationships, to social harms and altruism, and to mindfulness, among other topics. He will also discuss SDT's applications, with special emphasis on health-care and clinical interventions, and motivation within educational and virtual environments.
