In his talk, 'Look Up Perth', Richard Offen will touch on the history of some of Perth's superb wealth of heritage buildings, telling the story of their birth and people behind their creation. From the city's oldest standing building, the Old Court House to treasures such as His Majesty's Theatre, Richard will demonstrate how important these places to the creation of Perth's unique 'sense of place'.
About the Speaker
After teaching for a number of years, Richard joined the staff of the UK National Trust in 1989 and from 1992 until 2003 was responsible for the Trust's famous Neptune Coastline Campaign. Under his direction the campaign raised over 28 million pounds, enabling the Trust to buy and protect nearly one hundred miles of the spectacular British coastline.
Richard has wide experience of heritage matters around the world. During his time with the Trust, he spent time with a number of organisations, including Eco Mediterranea (Spain), the Maltese National Trust, Italian National Trust and the Czech Union for Nature Conservation, advising them on conservation strategies and fundraising. For over 10 years Richard was also visiting lecturer for the Birmingham University Masters' Degree in Heritage Management. He was also a long-term member of the Canterbury Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, which ia a statutory committee providing conservation advice at diocesan level, in relation to church buildings and their contents.
During a six month sabbatical in 2001, Richard worked on secondment to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington DC and spent time on an exchange programme with the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and the National Trust in Australia (WA) in Perth.
Richard is Executive Director of Heritage Perth, which was set up to show the heritage of Perth in a positive light as a major social and economic asset. Through a series of innovative projects, Heritage Perth is demonstrating that heritage places can find a role in today's society without losing either significance or historic value.
Richard is a popular lecturer, has been a regular broadcaster on both radio and television for many years. In 1999, he wrote and presented a 55 minute documentary video, Neptune's legacy, which charts the history of the UK National Trust's most successful campaign. Richard was co-author of the National Trust Book 'The Living Coast' and wrote the extended captions for a book of aerial photographs of the British coast entitled 'Coastline UK'.
More recently, Richard was honoured by the WA Heritage Council in their 2014 Heritage Awards, winning the 'Outstanding Contribution to Heritage by a Professional in the Heritage Industry's' category.
