Prof Peter Eastwood is Deputy Director of the Institute for Respiratory Health and Director of UWA's Centre for Sleep Research in the School of Anatomy, Physiology & Human Biology. He is Editor-In-Chief of the journal Respirology, the major Respiratory Medicine Journal for the Asia-Pacific Region. He is a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow, and Scientific Director of the West Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study.
Norbert Berend is Professor Emeritus at the University of Sydney and HEad of Respiratory Research at the George Institute for Global Health. He also holds visiting and honorary professorships at 3 Chinese universities. He has a strong research background having held multiple grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia and having been a Project Leader in the Co-Operative Research Centre for Asthma and Airways for 12 years.
His administrative experience extends to having been Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Executive Director of the Royal North Shore Hospital, and serving as Director of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research for 12 years, a position from which he retired in June 2012. He is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Norbert has been heavily involved in national and international respiratory societies having been President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology. He has also served on the Council of the European Respiratory Society and has been a member of the Board of the American Thoracic Society. In 2011 Norbert was Chairman of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies.
Norbert's awards include the Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Medal in Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (1997), the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Medal (2011) and the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand Medal (2012). In 2012 Norbert was given an Award of Merit and mad an Honorary Member of the European Respiratory Society in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development of respiratory medicine. In 2003 Norbert was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to respiratory medicine as a researcher, administrator and educator.
