Anthropology Seminar Series : After the PhD: The lived experiences of aspiring academics |

The ageing and impending retirement of much of the academic workforce, as well as the growing casualisation of university staff, are two major issues impacting Australian universities today. These issues are particularly pertinent for recent PhD graduates who hope to secure academic positions. While research has been carried out on this group in Australia, most studies have been quantitative, or have focused largely on the casual academic.
In this paper, I offer some initial qualitative insights (based on ongoing research) into the understandings, experiences, and practices of aspiring academics, who may or may not be employed as casuals. I draw on 17 interviews carried out across three universities in Australia, among those that aspire to ongoing academic work or have done so in the past. These interviews were carried out in Perth, Western Australia, and in Adelaide, South Australia in 2015. I focus in particular on tensions in interviewees' accounts between their understandings of the lived realities of academic work and their desires for (secure) academic work.
