Archaeology Seminar Series : Tracks of change in the Murujuga landscape: Human feet and tracks in the engravings of Dampier Archipelago Other events...
Murujuga (the Dampier Archipelago, North West Australia) is a land and seascape that has experienced incredible social and environmental changes over the past 50,000 years. The region is home to over one million rock art engravings which express the sociocultural dynamics of this vibrant archaeological landscape. The rock art corpus is dominated by anthropomorphic and geometric, zoomorphic, and spooromorphic motifs that detail the changing environment and social landscape throughout time. A small component of engraved motifs within this extensive rock art assemblage is comprised of human feet and human tracks. These motifs remind viewers of the human connection to the landscape and provide a way to personally connect with the rich archaeology of the area. In this paper I will analyze the engraved human foot motifs that are found across the Archipelago to understand how they inform our understanding of the people that used this changing landscape. Working from the outer islands towards the mainland I will use multiple lines of evidence to situate human foot and track engravings within the largest open air rock art gallery in the world.
