Archaeology Seminar Series : New Insights into the Dynamics of Human Behaviour during the Last Glacial Maximum and Terminal Pleistocene in the Pilbara, Northwest Australia Other events...
The emerging picture from the Australian archaeological record shows a varied pattern of human responses to the environmental and climatic fluctuations that characterised the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, beginning c.30 ka and peaking between 23 to 18 ka) and the terminal Pleistocene in arid Australia. Archaeological data for these time periods is sparse, but suggests that areas such as the Pilbara uplands in Western Australia, with their reliable fresh water and associated food resources, became refuge areas for Aboriginal people during periods of heightened glacial aridity. My PhD research aims to gain new insights into the social and economic organisation of Aboriginal people during the late Pleistocene in the Pilbara region, and understand how groups in different parts of this region dealt with significant environmental changes during the LGM and terminal Pleistocene. Archaeological material will be analysed from several recently excavated rockshelters located on the Burrup Peninsula, Hamersley Range and the Abydos uplands. A technological analysis of the stone artefact assemblage from each site will be undertaken to provide information on patterns of site use, lithic technology, and mobility and provisioning strategies through periods of environmental change. Global debates around appropriate methodology in lithic mobility studies will be addressed by incorporating and evaluating a range of mobility measures that focus on indices of core and flake reduction and reduction sequence models. This research will contribute new and significant information to two current themes in Australian archaeology, understanding the flexibility and behaviour of some of the earliest people in Australia, and the ways in which forager societies adapted to significant environmental change in arid regions.
