Friends of the UWA Library Speaker : What have the Romans done for us? Other events...
In a famous scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian, the rhetorical question is asked "What have the Romans ever done for us?" and the answer turns out to be quite a lot.

This talk asks the same question in contemporary Australia and, unsurprisingly, will suggest a similar answer. From politics and law to culture (high and popular) and sport, Roman foundations exist and language and practice persist. The (Latin) motto of the University of Sydney gives part of our answer as to why this is, but the rest of the answer must surely lie in the fact that a thousand years of Roman culture still has much to say to us.
