A public lecture by Professor Peter Eastwood, Centre for Sleep Science, and Associate Professor Ajmal Mian, Machine Intelligence Group, UWA.
In this lecture Professor Eastwood will discuss the causes of sleep apnoea and its current treatments. He will then talk about the causes of sleep apnoea, and in particular the importance of the structure of the face, head and neck.
Associate Professor Mian will then describe a sophisticated way of measuring facial structures, based on 3-dimensional deformable model fitting - a highly accurate, fully automatic, self-learning process. He will demonstrate software that deforms a 3D face by varying a set of parameters. It is possible that in the future sleep apnoea will be diagnosed from a single 3-D photograph of the face.
