Title: Assessing Diagnostic Expertise in Industrial Settings
ABSTRACT
Although it is normally associated with medical practice, diagnosis is a cognitive construct that has found increasing application in complex, high technology environments including transportation and the management of utilities.
Referred as situation assessment in the Human Factors domain or sense making amongst researchers in organisational behaviour, it involves the recognition of a pattern or sequence of features that, in isolation or combination, have meaning for the observer. This presentation describes a program of research, the goal of which was to develop a psychometric tool that would enable the assessment of diagnostic skills across a range of industrial settings. Using associational learning and cue-based processing as theoretical foundations, a number of tasks have been developed and their discriminatory capacity validated in a range of industrial settings. A longitudinal study is currently underway and preliminary results will be reported. Ultimately, the research will enable the development and implementation of interventions to safeguard high technology, high consequence operational environments.
