PUBLIC LECTURE: Women and Jihad
|
|
The participation of women in suicide bombing and their presence in support of militants in Syria and Iraq, including the self-proclaimed Islamic State, has drawn attention to the question of women's role in jihad. The panel discussion is designed to provide a framework in which women's role in jihad can be understood.
Professor Samina Yasmeen and Dr Leila Ben Mcharek will discuss different trends of women's agency in jihad in Pakistan and Tunisia.
Women jihadism in post-'Arab Spring' Tunisia - Leila Ben Mcharek
The rise of militancy in Tunisia affects both men and women and the country has been struggling to subdue jihadis opposed to the transition to democracy following the 2011 revolution. Dr Leila Ben Mcharek obtained her PhD from the Sorbonne-Nouvelle University (France) in 2000. In 2009 she joined the British Embassy in Tunis and in 2012 joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Tunis as Human Rights Officer. She is an honorary fellow at CMSS.
Jamaat ud Dawah (JUD): from social jihad to active jihad - Samina Yasmeen
While providing implicit and explicit support for suicide bombings elsewhere, the narratives of JUD women on jihad privilege the social jihad and supporter of jihad space along the spectrum of possible roles for women
