Abstract

Finally, in May 2013, DSM-5 by the American Psychiatric Association was published, after 15 years of planning and development. There were and are many controversies around the DSM-5, particularly regarding, neurodevelopmental disorders, and most prominently concerning autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this talk, I will summarise changes in DSM-5, the classification of ASD, strengths and problems, DSM-5 field trials of ASD, and give a future outlook. Before doing that, I provide a brief overview of diagnosing ASD in general including some historical aspects, and the principles of operationalising diagnostic in psychiatry.
