Prof Johannes (“Hans”) Nossent has been appointed as the Winthrop Professor of Rheumatology at The University of Western Australia from 1.6.2014. Prof Nossent was born in the Netherlands where he completed his medical and specialist training before moving to Norway where he was Consultant and Professor in Rheumatology at the University Hospital North Norway from 1997-2012. During his tenure in Norway, he spent a sabbatical period in South Australia investigating genetic aspects of Sjøgren’s disease. This subsequently led to a more permanent move down under in 2012, when he was appointed Staff Rheumatologist at the Royal Darwin Hospital, from which position he was recruited to Perth by the chairman of the board of WA Arthritis Foundation. His main research interests are the epidemiology, and outcome of systemic inflammatory auto-immune diseases, with a special focus on the development and use of biomarkers in this field.
