Axel Kallies is a laboratory head in the Molecular Immunology Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne.

Dr Kallies received his PhD from the Free University in Berlin, Germany, where he worked on transcriptional targets of IRF-8 and their role in myelopoiesis. In 2003 he became a postdoctoral fellow of the German Research Foundation and joined the group of Prof Stephen Nutt at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) to work on the role of the transcription factor Blimp1 in B cells. Later he received fellowships from the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of the USA and extended his studies to the transcriptional regulation of T cell differentiation. In 2009 he was awarded a Future Fellowship, and in 2010 he started his independent research group at WEHI.

Currently, Dr Kallies holds a Sylvia and Charles Viertel research fellowship. His work focuses on the transcriptional and metabolic control of peripheral lymphocyte differentiation and lymphoma development. Furthermore, the interphase between immunology and systemic metabolic dysregulation is an emerging interest of his research group. Dr Kallies has published in some of the leading journal of the field including Nature Immunology and Immunity.
