A public lecture by Professor Emily Chan, Director, Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response.
China is a natural disaster-prone country and its rural population faces the highest natural disaster risk. Like Australia, China faces challenges to disaster response resulting from large geographical distances and remote communities. However, in China these communities are often characterised by being ethnic-minority based, living in extreme poverty (less than USD$1.25/person/day) and lacking technical “know-how” and resources for disaster preparedness. These at-risk populations are often left to fend for themselves post-disaster.
The Ethnic Minority Health Project conducts needs assessments, health interventions and evaluations in rural and remote areas of China. The Project has visited a total of 12 villages across 9 provinces. Many have experienced earthquakes, severe flooding, typhoons, and landslides. The Project provides training in disaster preparedness, first aid, public health interventions and recovery for local community members.
The Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response believes that multi-disciplinary collaborations and appropriate opportunities are required for success. In addition to improving health outcomes the project model also serves as an example for other projects that support public health programmes in rural settings which attempt to capitalize efforts to mitigate adverse disaster impact and to improve health outcomes in China.
In this lecture, Professor Chan will discuss the lessons learnt from the Ethnic Minority Health Project, particularly about disaster preparedness and response.
