Bruce Robinson is a clinician-scientist at UWA and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He is the current West Australian of the Year, and WA Australian of the Year. Bruce is the Director of the NHMRC-funded National Centre for Asbestos Diseases Research (NCARD), an Australian national cooperative of Australia’s outstanding researchers in asbestos diseases, based in Perth. The work of NCARD is aimed at making an impact on asbestos cancers, particularly mesothelioma and lung cancer. The NCARD researchers have pioneered many areas including novel cell lines, transgenic mouse models, proteomics leading to human blood biomarkers, novel immunotherapy approaches, tumour gene sequencing. These findings have been translated into the clinic with ten world first clinical trials.
The NCARD team at Perkins includes scientists and clinicians with a combined authorship of more than 400 peer reviewed papers, more than 10,000 citations, key invited reviews in the highest impact factor journals, and editorships of several key reference books. These team members have won more than $19 million in NHMRC funds and received numerous prestigious scientific awards for their work including the Wagner Medal, the WA Premier’s Science Award, the AMA medal, the TSANZ Medal, the Willoughby medal, the iMiG Young Investigator award, the Eric Saint Award and a Member of the Order of Australia. They are frequently named as world leaders in asbestos disease research.
