Abstract:

Some classic problems of optimal packing are reviewed: the Kepler Problem, the Kelvin Problem, and cylindrical packings of spheres and disks. The latter are tentatively associated with the celebrated phenomenon of spiral Phyllotaxis, much in evidence in the splendid gardens of UWA.
