The film 'Sisters of Gion' portrays pre-war Japanese society's treatment of women. It is one of director Kenzo Mizoguchi's finest pre-war films. It tells the story of two sisters who work as geishas in a district of Kyoto.

This screening is part of the public program of events accompanying the exhibition 'Ukiyo: Japanese Prints of the Floating World' on show at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery from 8 Februaru until 28 June 2014.
