Abbie completed a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biomedical Science and a Bachelor of Forensics double degree in 2011. She also achieved a concurrent Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration as part of Murdoch University’s MasterClass Program. In 2012, she completed her Honours in Molecular Biology under the supervision of Dr Jacky Bentel at RPH, achieving a First Class grade for her thesis entitled “ETS1 Modification of the Hormone Responsiveness of Breast Cancers”. She joined the Centre for Clinical Research in Emergency Medicine (CCREM) at WAIMR in March 2013 starting her PhD under the supervision of Prof Simon Brown, Asst/Prof Shelley Stone, Prof Daniel Fatovich and Assoc/Prof Matthew Linden investigating the mechanisms of human anaphylaxis with a focus on the role of neutrophils.

Joanne van Vuuren completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. She continued with a Master of Science in Biomolecular and Life Sciences at the same university. During her Master’s, she completed two research projects of which one was done under supervision of Prof. George Yeoh at UWA titled “Transformation of Liver Progenitor Cells”. After completing her Master of Science degree in the Netherlands, Joanne returned to Perth to start her PhD at WAIMR with Dr. Louise Winteringham and Prof. Peter Klinken to investigate a novel tumour suppressor and the role it plays in regulating TGF-β signaling.
