ARCHAEOLOGY SEMINAR SERIES : LEARNING FROM IMAGES: CHINAMWALI GIRLS INITIATION ROCK ART IN SOUTH CENTRAL AFRICA Other events...
Abstract: Dr Zubieta will discuss a particular white painted tradition in south-central Africa (Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique) linked to the Chewa matrilineal group. She will show how women employed these images, probably as recently as in the last century, to communicate important lessons within the girls’ initiation ceremony known as Chinamwali. This ceremony still takes place in the area today but the tradition of rock painting has ceased.
